Tips & Tricks Low Range Light Flashes, Fault Code P1831

If the low-range light flashes rapidly after vehicle start and fault code P1831 appears, do not replace transfer case motor. The error is caused by a temporary loss of communication between the transfer case control module and the shift motor position sensor. To resolve, the transfer case shift motor needs to be cycled using the following procedure

Models Affected (as of Chassis #A346835)
  1. 1998 - 2003 ML320 (163.154/112.942)
  2. 2000 - 2003 ML55 (163.174/113.981)
  3. 2002 - 2005 ML500 (163.175/113.965)
  4. 2003 - 2005 ML350 (163.157/112.970)

Procedure
  1. Read and erase fault codes.
  2. If other fault codes are present, diagnose and repair accordingly.
  3. If fault code P1831 is present, start the vehicle.
  4. Shift to Neutral (N).
  5. Push the "low range" switch. Depress the brake pedal.
  6. After the shift motor has cycled, push the "low range" switch again. The "low range" light should go out.
  7. Confirm proper transfer case shift function by cycling the ignition and repeating steps 2-5

While performing the transfer case shift adaptation, take all necessary safety measures such as applying the parking brake & holding the service break firmly. Failure to do so may result in unintended vehicle movement.
